Access Control

Access control is the technology for securing physical spaces and managing authorized movement within facilities. It spans electronic, electromechanical, mechanical, and digital technologies such as identity management software or networked/cloud platforms that collectively manage who or what can enter, exit, or remain within defined boundaries. Modern access control systems integrate hardware and software, combining sensors, credentials, controllers, locks, and management platforms to address physical security alongside compliance and operational efficiency in commercial buildings, data centers, residential complexes, medical facilities, and industrial environments.

What was once primarily dominated by mechanical locks and standalone electronic readers has evolved into a sophisticated ecosystem of connected, intelligent, and cloud-enabled systems. Today’s access control solutions are expected not only to secure doors, but also to integrate seamlessly with digital identities, smart buildings, and whole IT infrastructures.

Common applications in the access solution industry

Digital and Mobile Credentials

Physical keys are slowly being replaced by RFID, NFC, and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) credentials in many commercial and business environments. Access cards are now widely accepted as secure access tokens when using modern encrypted technologies, offering convenience and flexibility for both users and system administrators.

Why choose Telcona?

Choosing the right partner is just as important as choosing the right components. With almost 40 years of experience in the electronics industry, Telcona has built a strong reputation as a reliable and knowledgeable partner for electronic components across a wide range of applications.

What truly sets Telcona apart is its engineering-driven approach. Our dedicated engineering team understands applications, not just part numbers. By engaging early in the design process, Telcona’s engineers work side by side with customer teams to understand application requirements, operating conditions, and long-term expectations. This collaborative approach allows us to recommend the right components from the start—optimizing performance, reliability, cost, and availability while reducing the risk of redesigns later in the project.

Cyber Resilience Act Logo

EU Cyber Resilience Act: The Path to Compliance

The Cyber Resilience Act (EU) has now entered into force, and manufacturers, importers, and distributors need answers: 'What is it exactly?' and 'What do I need to do to comply?'. Compliance requires a 'Security by Design' approach. At Telcona, we provide the high-precision timing and reliable backup power essential for stable cryptographic handshakes and preventing data corruption during mandatory security updates. We help you navigate these requirements to ensure your devices provide a clear path towards compliance and long-term user safety.

Core Components for Access Control Systems

Timing & Frequency Control

Quartz crystals are essential components in access control devices such as electronic door locks, RFID and BLE readers, and access controllers. They provide accurate clock signals for MCUs and secure communication interfaces, ensuring reliable credential authentication and stable timing for encrypted communication. Commonly used frequencies are 16.0 and 24.0 MHz for BLE and NFC controllers, while 32.768 kHz crystals support real-time clocks and ultra-low-power sleep modes.

Energy Buffering & Backup

Supercapacitors are increasingly used in access solutions to provide short-term energy buffering and operational continuity. In electronic door locks, they ensure that critical actions—such as completing a lock/unlock cycle—can be safely executed during battery replacement. They also handle short bursts of high current required for motor actuation, reducing stress on primary batteries and extending their service life.

Power Sources

Access control systems rely on reliable battery technologies chosen for specific usage profiles. Lithium coin cells (CR2032, CR2450) power low-energy ID readers and wireless sensors. In centralized controllers, rechargeable Li-ion or NiMH battery packs provide essential emergency operation during mains power outages, ensuring continuous security and site integrity without interruption.

Audio Indication

For clear user interaction, piezo buzzers provide audible feedback in door locks and keypads. They signal critical events such as access granted or denied, invalid credentials, or low battery warnings. These components offer a simple, low-power, and cost-effective solution for immediate user signaling in both indoor and outdoor access environments.

Visual Indication

LED indicators, typically in SMD variants, are the primary user interface for status monitoring. They provide immediate feedback on access status, system readiness, and fault conditions. Clear visual signaling significantly improves the user experience and simplifies the troubleshooting process for maintenance personnel and system installers.

Tamper Proofing

Reed switches and magnetic sensors are vital for security integrity, providing the primary method to detect door status and monitor unauthorized entry. Beyond open/close sensing, these components are essential for tamper-proofing RFID/NFC reader units. By protecting internal hardware integrity, they ensure any attempt to crack open, remove, or disrupt the device triggers an immediate alarm. To provide multi-layered security, Telcona also offers tactile switches and optical sensors as secondary mechanisms to detect and report even the slightest enclosure movement.
