Introducing Crystal & Circuit Testing Services

Telcona is expanding its portfolio with two new technical services, developed and delivered in direct collaboration with our manufacturing partners. These services are designed for design engineers, hardware teams, and procurement managers who work with quartz crystal components - across any industry or application.

The Gap Between Datasheet and Reality

Both services address a straightforward but frequently overlooked engineering reality: the nominal specifications on a crystal datasheet are general values - not measurements of the specific component in your circuit.

When you purchase a quartz crystal, it comes with nominal parameters - frequency, tolerance, load capacitance, drive level, and ESR. These define an acceptable range of behavior across an entire production batch. They do not define the precise equivalent circuit of an individual sample, nor how that sample will interact with your specific IC, external passives, and PCB layout.

This gap between nominal specification and actual circuit behavior is one of the most common - and costly - sources of oscillator-related problems in production electronics. Without proper testing, the consequences are well documented:
  • Frequency inaccuracy and instability in the field
  • Oscillation startup failures at low temperatures or end of component life
  • Excessive drive levels causing accelerated crystal aging and long-term frequency drift
  • Late-stage redesigns after design freeze - with significant cost and schedule impact

From Measurements to a Verified Specification

Once the true equivalent circuit parameters of a quartz crystal and its oscillation circuit have been measured and documented, a tight, application-specific specification can be written. This becomes the definitive electrical reference for your design - and, critically, it enables confident component replacement and supplier qualification based on verified data rather than datasheet estimates.

Circuit Board Testing
In-circuit measurement on your actual PCB
Intended for
Engineers who have an oscillator circuit on their own PCB and need to know whether the crystal and the circuit are properly matched. Typical reasons to request this service are a new design going into production; frequency issues of an existing design; a change of crystal supplier or package; or migration of a proven design to a new IC.
