A Technical Deep Dive with Edison Opto
At the end of 2025, our Belgrade Competence Center hosted Jeff Yin from Edison Opto for a series of technical workshops. As a key partner for Telcona, Edison’s visit was an excellent opportunity to align our engineering teams on the latest semiconductor trends and the future of high-power illumination.
Here are the key takeaways from our sessions that will shape the solutions we bring to our customers in 2026.
1. High-Power LED Specialization
Unlike standard signal LEDs, Edison’s core competence lies in Power LEDs. During the training, we explored their specialized product groups, including PLCC, EMC, and COB.
- Binning & Color Precision: Jeff provided deep insights into the "White Color" binning structures. By mastering 1-step vs. 3-step SDCM binning, our team can better advise clients on balancing cost-efficiency with absolute color consistency.
2. The Growing Frontier of UV Technology
One of the most exciting segments of the visit was the focus on UV LEDs.
- Continuous Disinfection: Edison Opto’s UVC LEDs are highly effective for the sterilization of various viruses and bacteria. Sterilization is dependent upon factors such as irradiance (mW/cm2), sterilization distance, UV lethal dose (mJ/cm2), and time. Our UVC products come in various wattages (0.5 – 4.2W) and wavelengths (265-280nm).
- UVC Power: For air and water purification, Edison is pushing the boundaries of UVC power density, offering effective sterilization rates of 99% in compact form factors.
3. Intellectual Property (IP) & Patent Safety
In the global LED market, "patent peace" is a major concern for manufacturers. Jeff highlighted Edison’s rigorous dedication to quality and regulatory procedures regarding IP issues.
Why this matters for Telcona customers: When we design an Edison component into your product, you can be confident that the technology is fully licensed and protected. This removes the risk of legal conflicts with original manufacturers, ensuring a safe global go-to-market strategy for your end-devices.
4. Customization & Engineering Flexibility
A central theme of our technical workshop was the "1:1 Replacement vs. Redesign" approach.
- Tailored Solutions: When standard parts don’t fit a specific footprint, Edison’s R&D team works on developing custom solutions that match the required electrical specifications even if the solder pads differ.
- Rapid Prototyping: We have streamlined our internal processes to move from a Request for Quotation (RFQ) to a technical solution in as little as 2–3 days, with samples (up to 100 pcs) available for our customers to test immediately.
Looking Ahead to 2026
With the Electronica fair in Munich coming up later this year, we are excited to showcase how these insights are being put into practice. The partnership between Telcona’s application engineers and Edison’s manufacturing power allows us to offer more than just a component—we offer a technologically sound, IP-safe, and future-proof design.
