Telcona presents KCRO-05: 12 femtosecond crystal oscillator

KCRO-05 Crystal Oscillator

Precision timing is the invisible infrastructure of modern electronics. From 800G optical transceivers to quantum computing platforms, every data bit depends on a clock signal that is clean, stable, and immune to noise.

River Eletec Corporation - one of Telcona's most trusted long-standing manufacturing partners - has just raised the bar with the KCRO-05: a crystal oscillator that delivers a world-class 12 femtosecond jitter figure directly from the resonator.

A Fundamentally Different Technology

To understand why the KCRO-05 matters, it helps to understand what makes it different at the physics level.

Conventional SAW (Surface Acoustic Wave) resonators propagate waves only along the surface of the quartz substrate. While mature and widely deployed, SAW technology carries inherent limitations: frequency ceilings, susceptibility to surface contamination, and thermal instability at higher frequencies.

River Eletec's engineers took a different path entirely. The KCRO-05 is built on their proprietary OPAW (Orthogonal Plate Acoustic Wave) vibration mode. Instead of confining energy to the surface, OPAW exploits the coupling of longitudinal P-waves and shear SV-waves that reflect and interact throughout the entire quartz substrate.

This unique vibration mode unlocks exceptionally high fundamental frequencies - exceeding 1 GHz - while simultaneously achieving thermal stability that surpasses both AT-cut and conventional SAW designs.

The KoT-Cut® Advantage

Central to the KCRO-05's performance is River Eletec's KoT-Cut® - a proprietary quartz cutting angle that has been independently patented in Japan, the United States, the United Kingdom, Taiwan, and China.

This is not a marginal refinement of an existing cut: it is a fundamentally different orientation that, when paired with the OPAW vibration mode, enables a combination of capabilities that no other resonator on the market currently matches.

The KoT-Cut delivers frequency stability that significantly outperforms AT-cut technology across a wide temperature range. Where AT-cut resonators face hard barriers in terms of frequency ceiling, structural fragility, and thermal drift, the KoT-Cut is designed from the ground up to remain consistent and reliable even in harsh thermal environments - making it a natural fit for outdoor infrastructure, aerospace, and industrial applications where temperature excursions are unavoidable.

Manufacturing Precision at Scale

Achieving these performance figures is not simply a matter of clever design - it demands extraordinary manufacturing precision. The KCRO-05 is fabricated using River Eletec's proprietary photolithography technology.

River Eletec's high-precision micro-processing enables the vibrating section to be made exceptionally thin while preserving structural integrity - a balance that is notoriously difficult to achieve and that underpins both the frequency capability and the temperature characteristics.

The same process also enables extremely accurate frequency adjustment at the unit level, allowing tight specification tolerances to be maintained in volume production.

Target Applications

The KCRO-05 is engineered for the timing-critical frontier of modern electronics. Its unique combination of characteristics makes it an ideal choice across several demanding sectors:

  • Next-Generation Networks: 800G and 1.6T PAM4 data transmission, and optical communication modules
  • Advanced Computing: Quantum computing systems where clock precision directly affects gate fidelity and computational accuracy.
  • Infrastructure & Aerospace: Outdoor infrastructure, aerospace platforms, and high-precision measurement instruments where thermal ruggedness is non-negotiable.
